Why is it...

Warning: RANT/Rabbit Trail/Screed (a long monotonous harangue)

Why is it, when I don't HAVE to read something I fly through it and when I HAVE to read something I begrudgingly drag my feet?

For the past, well, nearly 5 months, I've been reading non-stop. It began with C.S. Lewis' "Space Trilogy". Now, a bunch of books later, I find myself happily committed to multiple things at church where I need to read at least a chapter before the next meeting. And what do I find myself doing? Thinking "O man..." and looking at how many pages until I'm done. Am I averse to what I'm reading? No! I read the book of Joshua last night which, though overwhelming, was a wonderful reminder that not only is God with us, but He keeps His promises! The "God at Work" (by Gene Edward Veith) study on God in the workplace is even helpful even though I'm a stay-at-home mom. The "A Perfect Mess" (by Lisa Harper) devotions are funny to read and only once a month. And the study I'm doing with a friend on "Loving Your Husband" (by Cynthia Heald) reminds me of why God gave me my husband and how I can serve God better as a wife and mother.

Yet simply because they are necessary reads, I fight. I hinder myself from this wealth of knowledge found in these books because they aren't as exciting as "Count of Monte Cristo". Praise God that He humbles me greatly if I neglect my work just because it's dull.

“'God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.' Submit yourselves therefore to God... Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you." James 4:6-7,10
